Explore the two largest islands in Germany, Rügen and Usedom, as well as the Mecklenburg coast between Peenemünde und Stralsund by land and sea with an experienced bike guide and on board the impressive sailing ship, the Atlantis. On this tour, we cycle through varied landscapes in one of Germany’s sunniest regions and discover the famous Rügen chalk cliffs, dense forests, typical Bodden landscapes with fine sandy beaches, and the quiet countryside, where cattle and sheep graze peacefully in green pastures. Glamorous seaside resort towns such as Binz and Karlshagen and the Hanseatic cities of Stralsund and Greifswald are well worth a visit. On board the Atlantis we are accompanied by a friendly and attentive crew and during the ship's passages we have the opportunity to help hoist the sails and enjoy the sea voyage under full sail.

1st Day: Stralsund (Embarkation)
The Atlantis crew awaits us onboard in Stralsund in the evening, with check in at 7 pm. Once settled in the cabins, we have the opportunity to get to know the crew and fellow travellers during dinner. Should you arrive earlier, take the time to enjoy a stroll through the old Hanseatic city of Stralsund with its almost completely preserved medieval townscape. A visit to the maritime museum or the aquarium, Ozeaneum, located directly at the harbour, is also well worthwhile.

2nd Day: Stralsund – Glewitz ferry – Lauterbach (aprx. 25 mi./40 km by bike)
This morning it is time to “cast off and hoist the sails!” Onboard the Atlantis we sail through the narrow Strelasund (Strela Sound) to the Glewitz ferry pier, where we start our first cycling tour on the island of Rügen. We start with a small detour across the Zudar Peninsula before crossing Garz, the oldest town on Rügen. Towards the end of the day’s tour, we reach Putbus, a wonderful town well worth exploring with its classicist villas and star shaped grounds. Afterwards, we continue to Lauterbach, where the local fishermen's cutters, picturesquely situated in the harbour, create a colourful photo motif. Overnight stay in Lauterbach.

3rd Day: Lauterbach - Sassnitz (aprx. 32 mi./51 km by bike)
Today’s bike tour offers a true variety of landscapes, from coastal bike paths to trails through deep forests, routes along secluded lakes to glamorous seaside resorts with white sand beaches: everything a cyclist’s heart could desire! The first stop of the day is Sellin, enthroned on the cliffs and home to magnificent villas and a spectacular pier. We then cycle on through beautiful forests to the Baltic resort town of Binz, the queen of Rügen's seaside resorts. Here we have time to take a stroll along the beautiful beach promenade and watch the world go buy with a coffee in one of the lovely cafes. From Binz we continue north across the so-called Schmale Heide, a sand bar connecting Granitz with Jasmund. We pass Prora, the longest building in Europe reaching 4.5 km in length, where a visit to the Documentation Centre to learn about the “Strength through Joy” resort is well worthwhile.  Our final destination for the day is Sassnitz, which due to its ferry port is often referred to as the Gate to Scandinavia.

4th Day: Sassnitz Island – Cycling tour to the chalk cliffs (aprx. 29 mi./47 km by bike)
Today we have the most famous landmark on the island of Rügen to look forward to: the coast with its steep, white chalk cliffs. After breakfast, we head out and cycle through the Jasmund National Park to the visitor centre, where the famous Königsstuhl is also located. Here we have enough time to explore the cliffs before continuing on by bike to the north of Jasmund. A great place for a delicious roll with freshly smoked fish is the fish smoke house in the small fishing village of Lohme. After a swim stop in Glowe, we return to Sassnitz for the night.

5th Day: Sailing day from Sassnitz to Peenemünde
“Free as the wind!” is the motto of the day. Let the sea breeze play with your hair on today’s long cruise. We begin sailing northwards so that we can admire the famous chalk cliffs from the sea. The Atlantis then sails along the west coast of Rügen to Peenemünde on Usedom, the second largest island in Germany. The old fishing village of Peenemünde looks back on an eventful history and is known for its pioneering achievements in space history.

6th Day: Cycling tour around Peenemünde – Wieck (aprx. 34 mi./55 km by bike)
Today’s bike tour leads through the north of Usedom Island, which made a name for itself as the “Dallas” of the GDR, due to the oil that was extracted here. Along the way we may spot a horsehead pump or two, an image rather unusual in Germany. The tour leads first along the Peene River to the Wolgast ferry and on to the idyllic village of Krummin with its early medieval brick church of St. Michael. Here we enjoy a refreshing coffee break. Towards the end of the tour, a short detour takes us across the Gnitz Peninsula before passing the two resort towns of Zinnowitz and Karlshagen. In the late afternoon, we sail with the Atlantis to Wieck near the old Hanseatic city of Greifswald.

7th Day: Wieck – Stahlbrode ferry terminal – Stralsund (aprx. 18 mi./29 km by bike)
Today we start our day with a detour to the ruins of Eldena Monastery, which was one of Caspar David Friedrich’s most popular motifs, the famous Greifswald painter. After our short visit we cycle on along the towpath by the Ryck River to the old Hanseatic city of Greifswald, where we have time to enjoy a stroll through the old town. We then bike on through the countryside until we reach the Stahlbrode ferry dock and board the Atlantis for our last sail back to Stralsund. In the evening, we have the opportunity to say goodbye to the guides, crew, and fellow travellers during the captain’s dinner and reminisce over the wonderful week of adventure.

8th Day: Stralsund (Disembarkation)
After a rich breakfast it's time to pack our bags and say a final goodbye. Check out until 9 am. With a suitcase full of memories, it’s time to head home.

Changes
We reserve the right to make changes to the itinerary, depending on wind and weather conditions or organizational requirements.

Requirements: Level 1 - 2
The daily cycling tours on this trip range between 19 – 34 mi./30 – 55 km and are of an easier difficulty level. We cycle on fairly flat terrain and asphalt roads, though some farm roads and unpaved forest paths are used at times. Main roads with heavier traffic that do not have a separate cycle path are used only in exceptional cases. There are almost no long, steep climbs on this trip, though hilly landscapes and frequent ascents and descents are to be expected. Depending on the wind direction, stronger headwinds must also be expected. This tour is primarily designed as a guided group tour. However, upon prior consultation with the tour guides and the selection of a suitable route, nothing should stand in the way of individual cycling. You are more than welcome to choose to remain on board the ship on any day rather than taking the planned route should you so desire. The daily program depends on weather conditions and the captain's decisions.

Group riding pace:
On our regular cycling tours, the cyclists on regular bicycles determine the pace. We ask guests who have reserved an e-bike to be mindful of this and to acknowledge that the regular cyclists need time to rest and take longer to climb the hills. We thank you for your understanding.

Bringing Children
We believe that only children in a good physical condition and with a minimum age of 10 as well as previous bicycle tour experience would be able to master the cycle tours on their own strength. Please note that the minimum height for a rental bike is 1.50 m (5ft.).
